Young Athletes: The Future of Inclusion

Updated: 12 hours ago

On November 2nd we celebrated the conclusion to our 6 week long Young Athletes program  in partnership with Winooski School District and UVM student volunteer. Every Saturday from September 28th - November 2nd kids aged 2-7 with and without disabilities came together to learn and play together as a part of this fun-filled initiative that teaches fundamental skills and inspires a future of inclusion.

What is the Young Athletes Program?

The Young Athletes program is a unique, inclusive sports initiative for kids aged 2-7 that encourages early development of physical skills through play and activity. It focuses on fundamental movements such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching, all while fostering an environment of support and encouragement. This program not only aims to improve athletic abilities but also enhances social skills, confidence, and the overall well-being of young participants.

Fostering Inclusion

One of the most powerful aspects of the Young Athletes program is its ability to bring together children with and without intellectual disabilities. In a nurturing and inclusive environment, kids learn to appreciate each other’s abilities, build friendships, and develop empathy. As they engage in activities side by side, barriers are broken down, and a sense of community is fostered. This shared experience cultivates understanding and acceptance among all participants, reinforcing the idea that everyone has something valuable to contribute.

Inspiring Leadership

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the University of Vermont students who volunteered their time and energy to support this program. Your dedication, enthusiasm, and leadership have made a remarkable difference in the lives of these young athletes. Whether assisting with activities, encouraging participation, or simply being positive role models, your contributions have not gone unnoticed.

Looking Ahead

The Young Athletes program is more than just a sports initiative; it’s a movement that promotes inclusion and understanding. As we look to the future, we hope to continue expanding this program and its reach, creating more opportunities for young athletes to come together and thrive. Through programs like this, we can foster an environment where every child has the chance to shine and together, we can build a more inclusive future!
